From Whorf to Montague: Explorations in the Theory of by Pieter A. M. Seuren

By Pieter A. M. Seuren

This e-book explores the kinfolk among language, the realm, the minds of person audio system, and the collective minds of specific language groups. Pieter Seuren examines the prestige of summary rule structures underlying speech and considers how a lot computational energy might be attributed to the human brain. The e-book opens with chapters at the social fact of language, the traditional query of the primacy of language or suggestion, and the relation among common and language-specific beneficial properties. Professor Seuren then considers hyperlinks among language, good judgment, and arithmetic: he indicates the evidence of language require a thought with summary ideas, and that grammars will be noticeable as mediating among propositionally based strategies and structures, similar to speech, for the construction of utterances. He argues that grammars are neither independent nor self reliant of that means. He concludes via contemplating how a basic rephrasing of the fundamental ideas of good judgment may well reconnect it with cognition and language and contain a principled rejection of possible-world semantics.

Surinam was established in 1651 as an English plantation colony. The slaves that were imported from West Africa came into intensive contact with English on the plantations in Surinam, where they had to communicate with the overseers. In 1667, after a peace agreement between the Dutch and the English, the Dutch colony New Amsterdam, renamed New York, was swapped for the then more profitable sugar producing English-owned colony Surinam. The Dutch thus began to take over from the English in Surinam in 1667.

Napkins ‘lie in’ the cupboard and money ‘lies in’ the drawer, while wine ‘sits in’ the bottle and John ‘sits in’ prison or as a student ‘at’ a school, with the preposition op (‘on’), but at a Languages ‘go their own way’ 23 university only as a staff member, with the preposition aan (‘at’). ) When a Dutch speaker says that the plates sit in the cupboard, when they are in fact there, what is said is not false but merely ill-expressed. The exact cognitive conditions for the proper use of these and similar variants are thus not of a truth-conditional nature but merely a matter of conventionalized proper usage and thus of linguistic settling.

By 1680 all original English plantation owners had left and Dutch owners had taken over (Voorhoeve and Lichtveld 1975: 275). In 1975, Surinam gained its independence from the Netherlands but the national language of the country still is the English-based Creole which apparently settled during those few decades in the late seventeenth century. There are written records of the language as from c. 1700, which show clearly what it was like in the early eighteenth century and how it developed over the subsequent years (Schuchardt 1914: iii–xxxv; Voorhoeve and Lichtveld 1975: 273– 84).
