By Osho

On the contrary, it provides the necessary condition for resistance, and for sexual politics. The impact of feminism since the 1960s has simultaneously sharpened our awareness of the arbitrary nature of gender divisions, and increased the possibility of changing them. In recent years gender has increasingly been seen not simply as lived, but as 'performed' through the constant iteration and re-enactment of what are regarded as the essential characteristics of both sex (male and female) and gender (Butler, 1990,1993).

New sexual subjects seek ever more the right to privacy in their sexual and relational choices, and yet engage in a proliferating public discussion of their needs and desires, their rights and responsibilities. The growing 'sequestration' 32 Jeffrey Weeks or privatisation of sexual life that Giddens (1991) noted as a characteristic of modern western erotic experience has been balanced by an explosion of discourses about intimate life, which have profoundly redefined what we understand as sexuality on a global scale.

This is the real mark of what is different about the late twentieth century: those who used to be spoken of are now struggling in various ways, using different, often hesitant or incoherent languages to speak for themselves. The result is inevitably confusing, but enormously significant. We are here in a world where the imperatives of history, nature and science are being displaced by the norm of sexual choice, and where a master narrative is being displaced by a multiplication of new narratives, each claiming its own truth .
