Furthermore, the triumph of the people of God over their enemies must be paid for in advance by various forms of collective selfimmolation: defeat, tribulation, humiliation, and despair. Even the Last Roman Emperor typically waits in the wings while the enemy taunts the Christians by claiming that the Christians lack any savior (Alexander 1985: 154). Only when it appears that the Arabs, who have won many battles, will apparently vanquish the Christian world will the Last Roman Emperor arrive to eliminate the enemies of the people of God.
