By Richard K. Fenn
Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are engaged now not in a 'clash of civilizations' yet in a sectarian clash between branches of a unmarried civilization commonly steeped in apocalyptic imagery and ideology. Apocalypticism is a non secular luxurious that smooth civilizations can not have the funds for. Many may agree that the propagandists of the Christian correct have raised apocalyptic tensions to a deadly point in view that 9-11, yet during this booklet Richard Fenn takes at the mainline church leaders for his or her position in selling an apocalyptic view of background.

Those that have studied the LXX have commonly suffered a number of the tortures of Tantalus: the pride of vital discoveries turns out continuously to be nearby, yet, just like the fruit which hung over Tantalus' head, the discoveries continually recede sooner than the outstretched hand. CHAPTER 3 Terror and the Apocalyptic Imagination The convergence of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity toward an apocalyptic confrontation is both a product of the violence of the twentieth century and a very likely source of cataclysm in the twentyfirst.
This is collective madness, and much of it has been fed and sustained by Christian apocalyptic literature and popular belief in a Day of Judgment. So long as the churches continue to hold sacred their own apocalyptic beliefs, however, they are in no position to look down on the apocalyptic enthusiasts of the ‘Christian’ right, who think of the USA as the new Israel headed for triumph in the final battle against evil. Islamic Apocalypticism I am arguing that modernity, and a state that is both weaker and yet more intrusive, make people feel unsure about the survival of their communities and ways of life.
Furthermore, the triumph of the people of God over their enemies must be paid for in advance by various forms of collective selfimmolation: defeat, tribulation, humiliation, and despair. Even the Last Roman Emperor typically waits in the wings while the enemy taunts the Christians by claiming that the Christians lack any savior (Alexander 1985: 154). Only when it appears that the Arabs, who have won many battles, will apparently vanquish the Christian world will the Last Roman Emperor arrive to eliminate the enemies of the people of God.
