The Cornwall was an exception and served in the Indian Ocean and the South Atlantic, where she sank the German raider Pingiun on May 7, 1941. She was sunk in the Indian Ocean on April 5, 1942 by about 50 Japanese dive bombers. After being hit repeatedly she rolled over and disappeared in position 1°55'N, 77°56'E.
