The Council of Economic Priorities in its exceHent book, Shopping for a Better World, rates companies on a number of dimensions, including their treatment of women. This fine organization, however, only uses one index to rate women's progress: how many women are on the board of directors or among the top officers of the organization. Also, it ranks more than eight categories, such as environmental performance and community outreach, and treatment of women thus does not figure as prominently as we think it should.

Where we had data for some categories, we used the industry average for the missing category. This was done for companies marked with an asterisk in the tables. It should be noted that, as a result of our procedures, some of these scores may look better than they actually are, since many of the uncooperative companies had below-average scores for the categories for which we obtained information from other sources. There are several multiple-product companies that scored considerahly below average and should be avoided whenever possible. ConAgra and Nestle just missed receiving our average rating.
