Besides worrying about competition from liberal Protestant chaplains in the military, evangelicals expressed concern about the predominance of Catholic chaplains. When the Cold War buildup prompted the military to issue a call for additional chaplains, the executive director of the NAE urged evangelical ministers to volunteer their services. The army alone would need at least 450 new chaplains in 1952, he pointed out. "On some of our Naval Bases the only chaplains to be found are Catholics," he warned.
