We struggled to discern how this could fit with the attitude of most Christians toward war. Everyone was “Christian,” yet the Germans were fighting the English, the French, and the Italians, and vice versa. Gradually, and with much struggle, we came to feel that war could not be the will of God, and that the proclamation of the church as the mysterious Body of Christ (which we had heard so much about in those years) was being all but destroyed by it. In the fall of 1915 we moved with our three children to Wilmersdorf, a suburb of Berlin.
Articles and manuscripts that we and our friends found challenging and suitable for publication were not appreciated (and even turned down) by people in influential positions, and the resulting tensions frustrated us at a time when we felt the need around us and the Spirit calling us to action. Just at this juncture, friends at Schlüchtern asked Eberhard if he would be willing to take charge of a new publishing house they were planning to start, the Neuwerk Verlag.
